Literature Text

I found this lovely little short on Netflix.  It was a claymation about a witch and her little band of misfits who have trouble fitting on the witch's broomstick.  I won't give away too much of the plot, because the film is only about 25 minutes long so there isn't a whole lot to tell without spoiling the storyline.  The animation was adorable!  I could tell right away that the witch was a "good" witch, per say.  She had a cute braid with a bow on the end, and a fun patterned dress.  Of course she had the very typical black witch hat, but everything else was very non-stereotypical.

The music was a big part of this film in my opinion.  There wasn't actual speaking lines, but rather it was narrated.  And there wasn't much room for talking anyways seeing that the main characters (besides the witch) was a cat, a dog, a bird, and a frog.  The music changed with the different scenes and followed along the moods of the characters perfectly.  During the happy-go-lucky parts of the film, the music sounded so playful.  It had sort of an orchestra sound to it.  I absolutely loved it!  The music itself could almost tell the story.

The different characters expressed a lot of emotion and personality despite not having actual conversation.  The cat was of the grumpy sort, and the dog was of course very playful and loving.  The dog constantly was trying to make friends with the cat, who remained very unamused.  They had a sort of playful banter throughout the short which I found quite entertaining.

Of course I can't forget the  narration.  It was brilliant!  The narrator, Simon Pegg, had a slight British accent which made it all the more interesting.  He spoke so clearly and the lines all rhymed, which was fun.  The witch's voice was played by Gillian Anderson, who most of you probably know as Scully from X-Files.  So of course I loved that (you know how much I adore the X-Files!)

This movie had a very well-formed plot that was easy to follow even in a short 25 minutes.  I loved the animation, music, and characters.  I would highly recommend this!  It's got a timeless feel to it, and a good-natured heartwarming message at the end of the film.  You can't go wrong with watching Room on the Broom!
Directed by: Jon Lachauer & Max Lang

You can find this on Netflix; I'm not sure about YouTube- the versions I saw on there was not the version I wrote my review on. So if you look for this make sure it's the claymation version.
